Mouse to man: animal models and cell models in the study of Autism

Non-human model systems allow us to enhance our understanding of disease mechanisms in many disorders. These models provide an invaluable tool in identifying targets for drug and therapeutic development for human use. The use of rodents (e.g., mouse and rats) and stem cell models is widely disseminated throughout Autism research, but what discoveries have the use of these allowed and how have they led to therapeutic treatments?

Culture vs. conservation: the murky waters of the marine turtle trade

Conservation of endangered species can often come into conflict with the lives of the indigenous people who live with them. In the Gulf of Venezuela, protected species of marine turtles are used for consumption and trade by the people living there who rely on them for their livelihoods.Research published inMarine Biodiversity Recordstakes a closer look at this difficult situation, talking to the indigenous people about the roles turtles play in their culture and makes suggestions to improve conservation efforts.
