Double celebration for Xtreme Everest 2 expedition

Almost three long months of climbing, clinical research, highs and lows came to an end for theXtreme Everest 2team last Thursday. The celebration party inKathmandu, Nepal, was held six years to the day of the successful summit by the 2007Caudwell Xtreme Everestexpedition team, which involved many of the group who were part of this crew.

TheXtreme Everest 2 teamexplored the well-known ability ofSherpasto toleratehypoxia- 减少氧气 - 高海拔。在两个月内,研究了64个夏尔巴协作和100多名低地人,主要来自英国。科学议程的重点是微循环和线粒体功能,氮氧化物生物学和表观遗传学。

This week sees anotherEverestmilestone: tomorrow, May 29, marks 60 years since thefirst successful Everest summitbySir Edmund Hillary.

Celebrating last Thursday, Caudwell Xtreme Everest Hypoxia Research Consortium chair, andExtreme Physiology & MedicineEditor-in-Chief,Mike Grocottremarked:

“It is wonderful to be able to celebrate the success of Xtreme Everest 2 under Dan Martin’s leadership on the anniversary of thehistoric measurement of arterial oxygen levels high on Mount Everest.”

The two leaders took samples from each other and two other colleagues at 8,400 meters on Mount Everest, Nepal, on the 23rdMay 2007 as part of the Caudwell Xtreme Everest expedition, which studied human physiology at high altitude.
