Call for papers for an upcoming cross-journal article collection: Medical Imaging in Rheumatology

Jasvinder Singh, Guest Editor for an upcoming cross-journal article collection entitledMedical Imaging in Rheumatology: New Advances to Revolutionalize Diagnosis and Treatment, provides his perspectives on why this topic is of importance to the field of rheumatology, and outlines how manuscripts can be submitted for consideration in eitherBMC Musculoskeletal Disorders,BMC Medical ImagingorBMC Medicine.

Jasvinder Singh is an Associate Professor of Medicine and Epidemiology at the University of Alabama at Birmingham and staff physician at the Birmingham Veterans Affairs Medical Center. He is also a member of the American College of Rheumatology and serves as a committee member on the Guidelines subcommittee of the American College of Rheumatology’s Quality of Care committee, Veterans Affairs Rheumatology Field Advisory Committee, and the executive committee of the Outcome Measures in Rheumatology Trials (OMERACT).

Imaging has always played a key and beneficial role in the diagnosis and management of rheumatic conditions. One of the benefits of imaging is its versatility, enabling it to have an expanding role within the disciplines it is commonly used (for example, radiographs in inflammatory arthritis), as well as being flexible enough to work with new applications of imaging modalities such as ultrasound, CT, MRI and PET, just to name a few. The expanding utility of various imaging modalities and their validation for new indications is changing the way we think about treatment and follow-up of rheumatic conditions. Technological advances now offer better imaging abilities than before, as well as placing new tools in our hands. Our hope is that a better informed approach to the treatment of rheumatic conditions which can incorporate imaging information into decision-making, will ultimately improve patient outcomes.

Reviews, Debates and Opinion articles will also be published inBMC Medicine. In addition, commentaries will be considered for publication inBMC Medicine, referring to and commenting on key papers published in eitherBMC Musculoskeletal DisordersorBMC Medical Imagingas part of the article collection.
